Interior Design: Bathrooms

‘Living in a Listed Building, it was difficult to find anyone who could understand what I wanted to achieve in my bathroom, at the same time maintaining the character of the property. I was recommended to Kyla at Dovetail Design by a work colleague who had seen her work. The bathroom was a difficult shape for planning, exceptionally dark, and totally uninviting. Kyla spent a great deal of time on the design, giving exceptional attention to the details which were important to me, and the result is stunning! I now have a stylish, luxurious, beautiful, bright bathroom, which everyone comments on. For me, it has become an oasis of tranquillity that is a pleasure to spend time in. I cannot thank you enough Kyla.  You turned my vision into reality. If anyone asks me if I know of a good Interior Designer, I shall have no hesitation in giving them your details and telling them to contact you first because they will not need to look for anyone else.'

Bathroom DesignThe Client
The client lives in a beautiful ‘chocolate box’ cottage on the Oxfordshire/ Warwickshire border. The house had been neglected by the previous owners, and hadn’t been decorated for over 30 years. Being over 400 years old, the thatched cottage was subject to Grade II Listed Building Regulations.

Bathroom DesignsThe Challenge
There were a number of challenges with this project including Listed Building Control, lack of natural light and probably worst of all, the discovery of an open well underneath the floor! We worked hard with the client to manage the additional costs implications of dealing with this unwelcome hidden feature.

The Brief

Our client wanted to turn a dark, cold and uninviting bathroom with black tiles and turquoise bathroom suite into a relaxing and serene haven, reminiscent of a hotel spa. There was little natural light in the room so she was keen to lighten the colour scheme and open up the space. The client was keen for the redesigned bathroom to reflect the charm and character of the cottage.

The Feedback

We used light coloured tiles and (specialist) paint to ensure what light was available, was maximised. We increased the feeling of space and light by using large, pale coloured ceramic floor tiles and installing a glass shower screen. Recessed downlighters created not just an improved level of ambient light, but also task lighting on particular areas.
