A SUMMER WEDDING TO REMEMBER

David & Viv approached Dovetail three months before their Big Day with a view to us decorating two function rooms, an outside terrace and a large ramped entrance to their wedding reception venue, The Oak at Hockley Heath. Their wedding was taking place the day before at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons in Oxfordshire: the Saturday night was a black tie wedding reception for up to 100 close friends and family.

The couple had a clear idea of the overall look and feel that they wanted to achieve which provided us with a good starting point with the design scheme. They wanted to create a romantic and serene atmosphere throughout the venue, with as many twinkly fairy lights as possible! We also assisted the bride with a number of surprises for both the guests and the groom, including sourcing a giant ice sculpture, special effect coloured lighting, a gobo light for the dance floor and painstakingly hand-making ornate favours.

There was a great deal of space to cover in a short period of time as we were unable to access the venue until the morning of the event. This meant preparing in advance a lot of the decoration for fitting on site….the days and weeks leading up to the wedding were a frenzy of flower and foliage garlands, fairy lights and making the favours! Logistically we were also tasked with arranging and taking delivery of a number of additional items for the event: it was quite a challenge ensuring everything was laid out properly and then styled so as to be in keeping with the overall theme.

We feel that the venue styling and decoration reflected Viv and David’s personalities: elegant and sophisticated but in a classy and understated way. The couple entered the venue via a 30m entrance ramp decorated with candles and white and lime green flower garlands, intertwined with fairy lights and ribbon. This romantic theme then continued throughout the main function room, eating area and even the bathrooms! Both Viv and David were overwhelmed with the finished effect, saying it far exceeded anything they could imagine and had been the icing on the cake for their perfect wedding celebrations.

‘When planning an event, especially your wedding, detail is very important & so is the importance of actually enjoying it & not feeling stressed. When we met Kyla & Helen from Dovetail we had an instant rapport. The girls are very professional whilst having artistic flair. They listened to what we required & came up with some fabulous ideas! Nothing was too much trouble or a problem.

Our requirements were to decorate our venue, The Oak & make it look amazing. We just wanted to walk in knowing everything was sorted & looking beautiful & they exceeded our expectations! The place looked magical from flowers, decorations, photos, candles & lighting. It truly was amazing. The girls & their team worked extremely hard. They are fabulous girls to work with & we would definitely recommend their services & in face, use them again ourselves. We became very fond of them & would like to think of them as friends’

GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND DOGS DINNER GALA EVENT

GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND DOGS DINNER GALA EVENT

The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association were planning to host a Gala Dinner Event to celebrate the opening of the new Guide Dogs Breeding Centre in Tachbrook, Leamington Spa and to invite high level sponsors along to preview the new state of the art facilities and pledge support for the new building and upcoming projects. We were working with the Corporate Partnerships Team based just outside London, as well as the facilities team at the new breeding centre.

The client wanted to create a real wow factor in the room, creating a suitably formal and professional atmosphere, but within a relaxed and comfortable environment conducive to socialising, networking and most importantly, donating! We were also on a tight budget – the charity needed to ensure every penny allocated to the event was well spent and added real value. We worked with the client’s ideas and came up with a scheme incorporating striking black and white with an accent of the Guide Dog corporate colour, teal blue.

The difficulty was the structure of the building: the event was to be held in an unfinished room which was effectively still a building site: its ultimate use is yet to be determined. There was only a concrete screed floor, no ceiling – just service cables and gangways, and no electricity supply. We needed to supply everything from the floor, ceiling, lighting, furniture and decoration.  With the help of The Perfect Marquee Company, we created the feeling of an internal marquee by using drapes and voiles: this created its own difficulties as we were not able to attach any fixings to the walls or ceiling!

Using just three colours throughout, we had created a striking and dramatic venue. The low level lighting was enhanced by fairy lights hung across the ceiling drapes, intertwined with black organza. Being an event for Guide Dogs, we were keen to emphasise the importance of the five senses: so we focused on textures and finishes that appealed to hearing, touch, taste and smell. We were really pleased with the results and thoroughly enjoyed the event which Guide Dogs kindly invited us to as a thank you!

The client was completely blown away by the 24 hour transformation. The testimonial speaks for itself: ‘I knew from very early on at our first meeting that Dovetail Design would be perfect for the project and I had every confidence in the ideas and suggestions for our high level corporate event.  On the night of the event, I saw the venue and it was better than perfect – more stunning than what I had ever imagined.  Both Kyla and Helen were fantastic to work with, they took care of every single detail and I will definitely be working on similar projects with them next year, and in future.  I have absolutely no complaints.’

A Tea Party at Hampton Court

The first week in July means it’s time for the annual Hampton Court flower show, reported to be the largest show of its kind. And this year certainly didn’t disappoint. Approaching the site by water taxi along the banks of The Thames you pass by the magnificent Hampton Court Palace, home of King Henry VIII - could there be a more majestic setting for a flower show?

Fittingly, Kings & Queens, White Rabbits and Mad Hatters were in abundance-the Alice in Wonderland theme was omnipresent. From the wonderful rose marquee to the scarecrow competition; the love of vintage tea parties; and children’s classics - all are making a big statement in horticultural trends.

If you wanted to capture the Alice in Wonderland spirit in your own garden, there were ample shopping opportunities with stalls selling everything from stone rabbits to tea cup bird feeders.

Curiouser and curiouser!’ cried Alice and nothing could be truer in the show gardens featuring concepts such as Daniel Lobb’s ‘Landscape Obscured’ – the underground mushroom garden viewed by mirrors; Kari Beardsell’s ‘A Garden by Night’ – entirely constructed within a blacked out marquee and lit by eco and plant friendly LED lighting; and the wonderful upside down garden by Anoushka Feiler, ‘Excuse me while I kiss the sky’.

These gardens demonstrate how to push the boundaries of what we believe a traditional garden should be and to consider every space within your garden as having incredible creative potential.

Finally, this year’s best in show deservedly went to the CDN Consular Services Limited garden ‘I am, because of who we are’ designed by Caroline Comber with Petra Horackova.

This truly is a garden we would all love to own, the soft delicate grasses are interspersed with foxgloves and astrantia under a canopy of birch adding height and dappled shade.

This garden has been created to emphasise the need for communities, societies and nations to build mutually beneficial partnerships. Each circle is planted with a single species and where they interlock they create layer and depth with each part combining to create a cohesive design. The garden clearly demonstrates that when we all pull together greatness can be achieved.

Expert commentary by Phil Clayton – Features Editor of The Garden

This garden focuses on plants that suit a shady spot. Under the canopies of Betula albosinensis there are foxgloves including Digitalis ferruginea mixed with the bold foliage of Bergenia and the dainty flowers of Astrantia. This is all balanced with delicate grasses such as quaking grass Briza.

What’s hot this spring…the Malvern flower show

Last Thursday saw the doors open at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show. Being one of the first shows on the calender, Malvern is a great opportunity to get that all important first glimpse of what’s new in gardening and outdoor living.

The two gold medal awards in the Show Gardens Arena proved that our appetite for grow-your-own and sustainability remains as strong as ever.

The Best in Show was won for the 3rd year in a row by Graduate Gardeners, whose ‘Garden for Life’ incorporated many sustainability concepts including rainwater harvesting, a solar powered water feature, an Eco Beehive and a Wormery. They highlighted how even the smallest of spaces can not only be utilised for growing fruit and veg but at the same time, with its beautiful naturalistic planting, be a garden we would all love to own.

A second worthy gold was awarded to ‘My Very Local Veg Garden’ by Hannah Genders. Everything in the garden was sourced within a cycle ride of her Evesham home, making it truly local! She used many heritage seeds such as the climbing bean ‘Painted Lady’ and everything was labeled so you could see how far she had to cycle to source it. I just love the old church chairs she has sourced for the outdoor dining, I shall be keeping my eye out for some of them!

The whole garden will be rebuilt at Hillers Farm Shop, Alcester, so if you missed it you will be able to pop along and have a look.

In the Floral Marquee, ‘reuse, recycle and reduce’ was a mantra continually repeated as we saw wonderfully inventive ways to display our plants and veg. Bath tubs, wine boxes and step ladders were all used to demonstrate how easy it is to achieve the very best in Eco Chic design.

Finally, the star of the show has to be this Ladybird poppy; its cheerful head was seen bobbing out of plastic bags and plant trolleys all day as eager shoppers took it home to brighten up a corner of their own garden.  These easy to grow poppies will flower all summer, and although they are grown as annuals, if they are happy in your garden will self-seed for many years to come.

Vertical gardening with living walls

The temperature is hotting up and the days are getting longer. It can only mean one thing; that’s right, spring is finally here. What could be nicer than sitting out on a warm evening with a glass of wine in the garden? However, if your garden is looking a little uninviting right now, consider vertical gardening as a way of bringing it bang up to date.

While feature walls in the home remain ever popular, creating a feature wall in your garden is rapidly becoming the latest trend in garden design. These green, or living walls, are particularly great for small spaces as they allow you to garden vertically and maximise your green space.

The creator of the green wall concept is the French botanist Patrick Blanc who’s large scale vertical gardens can be seen all over the world, often scaling the side of entire buildings such as the Athenaeum Hotel, Piccadilly, W1.

While these magnificent structures might seem a million miles away from the suburban garden, it is actually relatively easy to create a small scale version in almost any garden.

At the RHS London Plant and Design show back in February two rising stars of the gardening world, Hugo Bugg and Melissa Jolly demonstrated how green-roof gardening and living-wall planting can be stylish and sleek as well as good for the environment.

Environmentally, these living walls will increase biodiversity, filter air pollution and absorb sound in your garden as well is being incredibly versatile with regard to what you can grow in them. They can be planted as evergreen, seasonal or perhaps as a herb or vegetable garden. You can even grow them indoors.

There are many companies that will design, install and maintain these living structures for you or you can very easily do it yourself. One option are these simple planters from notonthehighstreet.com:

They are an incredibly simple and inexpensive way of getting the designer look at a fraction of the cost, all you need is a little imagination.

Spring cleaning the environmentally friendly way!

It is March 1st, which in my book means the first day of spring. The clocks will be going forward in a matter of weeks: daffodils will soon be everywhere and it’s Mothering Sunday in a few Sundays’ time. It also means that I should start thinking about spring cleaning to dispense once and for all with the dull, stale stuffiness of the long winter months.

While there are clearly a number of very effective cleaning products on the market, I’m going to stick once more to my Granny’s vintage ideas and tips, and use good old vinegar. Vinegar cleans because it cuts through grease. This also makes it useful for eating away at grimey build ups. It also inhibits the growth of mould, dissolves mineral accumulations, freshens the air and kills bacteria. Not only is it cheap (as chips) but it is incredibly versatile – it is also non toxic which makes it a perfect environmentally friendly solution around pets and children.

Here are some of my Granny’s top tips for spring cleaning with vinegar:

  • REMOVING COFFEE AND TEA STAINS: An equal mixture of salt and white vinegar will clean those pesky coffee and tea stains from china cups.
  • SOAKING BADLY STAINED POTS AND PANS: Use full strength white vinegar for 30 minutes to soak non-aluminium food stained pots and pans. Rinse thoroughly in hot soapy water.
  • CLEAN GLASSWARE: Mix half a cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon of water. When the white vinegar is added to the rinse water, it removes the dull soapy film on the glass and leaves it fresh and sparkling.
  • RINSING THE DISHWASHER: Try adding 3 tablespoons of vinegar to your dishwasher rinse cycle for streak-free, sparkling dishes instead of using rinse aid.
  • CLEANING CHOPPING BOARDS: Chopping boards can be wiped down with full strength vinegar to not only clean them, but cut grease and absorb odours.
  • MICROWAVE OVEN CLEANING: Use vinegar to clean your microwave by adding half a cup of white vinegar to 1 cup of water in an uncovered bowl and place in the microwave. Set the power on high for 3 – 4 minutes. Leave to stand for 15 minutes and finish by wiping down the inside of the oven.
  • CLEANING THE FRIDGE: Spring clean the fridge by washing with a solution of equal parts of white vinegar and water.
  • WASHING WINDOWS: Mix 3 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar with half a teaspoon of washing up liquid and 1 pint of water. Best applied using a spray bottle (although the plants won’t thank you if you use their one). Spray the solution onto the glass and then remove with a paper towel. Polish with dry newspaper when dry.
  • CLEANING A SHOWER HEAD: Remove the showerhead by unscrewing it to remove the rubber washer. Put the showerhead in a pot filled with equal parts vinegar and water, bring to the boil and leave to simmer for five minutes. Another option would be to soak the shower head in vinegar overnight, then rinse thoroughly in hot water.
  • CLEANING YOUR COMPUTER: Remove any excess dust from your keyboard, mouse and monitor. Add a little bit of distilled white vinegar to a damp cloth. The damp cloth will protect your computer from static. Wipe down the cables, mouse, keyboard and monitor to remove all dirt and leave you with a static free computer.

Next week – ‘Using vinegar in home decorating’.

Key trends for weddings: spring/summer 2011

We can finally turn the heating down just a notch, and the spring flowers are poking their heads through….Ahh, thoughts of spring induce warm fluffy feelings of new life, longer days and the promise and anticipation of ‘BBQ summers’. Unless you’re getting married. For those getting hitched this year, it’s a signal to start panicking: the wedding day is just around the corner and you haven’t even finished the ‘to do’ list yet, let alone come to terms with the ‘I do’ bit.

Where do you start? Well, don’t panic! Alongside our interior design and garden design service, Dovetail offers a bespoke wedding service to help you design and style your theme or venue for the Big Day. We will help you with all the design aspects: the concept of the theme, styling ideas for how best to dress the inside and outside spaces, and sourcing the key items. The bit we really love is coming along the day before the wedding and making the whole thing happen. Which leaves you free to get ready in peace, stress free, knowing that the main event is in very capable, reliable hands and all you have to do is turn up and enjoy your very special day.

The average wedding now costs £23,000, which is an incredible amount for one, albeit unforgettable, day. We are therefore also proud to offer a rental service for the items needed to create your wedding design: everything from candelabra to chair covers; votives to centre-pieces for the tables.

Whatever you need to create the theme, atmosphere and wow factor, we can hire it to you at a fraction of the purchase price….afterall, who wants to be left with 18 birdcages or 24 cake stands after the Big Day?!

The key trends and fashions in interiors and gardens translate across to weddings and we are therefore ideally placed to provide you with a complete design package for the whole event, including both the interior and outside spaces. So, on to the hot trends for weddings in 2011: here is our take on the key themes, coolest ideas and themes for the upcoming season:

  • Vintage teaparty. Dig out your Grandma’s vintage china tea set and the bunting. This year it’s all about the great garden teaparty, and the more outdoors it is, the better. We are still hankering to get back to nature – wild flowers, woodland images and all things vintage are still taking centre stage. Think cake stands, wire fretwork, birdcages and lots of foliage. Fairy cakes are still very popular, and packets of seeds or small pots of lavender make great favours.

  • Red, white and blue. There are a number of events coming up that make us proud to live in Great Britain. The Royal Wedding is just a few weeks away (Wills and Kate, we are still free on April 29th and available for consultation)…..followed by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and of course the London Olympics. For the next 2 years, red, white and blue will be a hot trend for interiors and themes for events. Supported no doubt by street parties up and down the land. Britannia rules!

  • Romance. It sounds corny, but Romance is a big theme for the upcoming season. Think pretty frills and ruffles, layers of chiffon and organza, soft pastel hues, nudes and ice cream colours. The bold fuschia pinks are still en vogue, but the muted, more feminine soft pink tones are also bang on trend. Coral, peach and salmon also play a key role. For accessories, hearts are the easiest and most obvious choice, along with drop crystals and jewels to add sparkle. Candles are a cost effective way to add atmosphere and are available in a plethora of shapes and styles. Flowers are sophisticated with pastel roses being the dominant piece. Words and letters remain popular, with Love, Dream, Romance, and the initials of the happy couple taking centre stage. Try www.notonthehighstreet.com for handcrafted ‘Mr & Mrs’ letters.

Thumb__

  • Monochrome. A monochrome colour scheme is a timeless classic. Black and white is the obvious choice (cue the idea of black and white outfits for all the guests), but this season’s take on monochrome is to add a contemporary twist by using a bold accent colour such as purple or lime green. Other monoschrome themes for spring/summer 2011 combine two colours, such as sage and lemon or peach and pear. Any monochrome theme is going to produce a striking effect. We think this scheme would benefit from a bit of bling to bring it together: glass beads or ‘jewels’ on the table or glass droplets on a candelabra would be an ideal way to add some sparkle.

Featuring feature walls

The feature wall has been around for a while, in many forms and guises. Wallpaper is still huge and probably the most dramatic way to change the look and feel of your room. The great thing about wallpaper is that like bold paint, if you don’t like it when you’re done, it’s relatively easy and cheap to start again. The trick, however, is getting it right in the first place.

So, where do you start in deciding how to chose feature wallpaper? It is quite easy to ascertain what is in vogue if you’re keen to keep up with the latest trends. All of the homes and interiors magazines will point you in the right direction on colours, size and scale of prints and what sort of pattern you should be looking for.

But there are a few other things to consider: where does the light enter the room and is it a north or south facing room? Are there any other features in the room which could be enhanced or which might overpower the room and what other pattern is going on in the space? By all means, go bold, but patterns only work together if you go for something of a similar colour tone or a similar size pattern…human sized daisies on the fireplace with life sized ones on the curtains won’t make for a particularly restful environment (ok, I’m exaggerating but you get my point).

The other trick is to match different items in the same pattern a few times throughout the space, so for example, a feature wallpaper matched with cushions in the same pattern (a big thing on the high street at the moment is matching wallpaper and fabric which is fine if you all the other walls are plain), with maybe a framed print of the pattern on a plain wall.  You will see from the Designers Guild Bernardini fabric below that the same fabric has been used for the drapes as the feature wall, creating a continuous and melodious scheme that I think makes the dimensions of both the wall and the window appear bigger. The second picture reinforces the feeling of harmony between the different items in the room.

The other way to decide what sort of feature wallpaper would suit your room is to look at your existing furniture and accessories. It might be that you have a favourite armchair or lamp that could create the basis for the feature wall design: or a piece of artwork that you have picked because of the colours or the theme. By focusing on one item and picking out the colour or pattern that most appeals, you should be able to find inspiration for the whole wall.

If there isn’t anything that jumps out at you, create your own focal point: a console table with candlesticks or a nice vase; a group of your favourite photographs arranged on a wall, all mounted in similar frames or in all reproduced in black and white. Great tip is to lay them out on the floor first before you start banging holes in the wall!

Another very cheap and effective way to create a new feature wall is using wall stickers. I know I’ve blogged about them before, but what a quick and simple way to provide a change of scene. If you don’t like the pattern, some stickers can even be peeled off and restuck somewhere else…here are a few more of my faves.

The snowdrop: Is spring around the corner?

On the coldest of January days, what could be better than seeing the head of the humble snowdrop breaking through the frozen ground? Often seen flowering in the last week in January, it is a sure sign that spring is finally just around the corner.

A native plant to Europe, the snowdrop (Latin name, galanthus: coming from the Greek gala (milk) and anthos (flower)) is a member of the Amaryllis family. It is thought to have been brought to the UK in the 16th century, and while there are many varieties of snowdrop they are often endangered, meaning that wild snowdrops are now protected by law.

Although there is a vast array of snowdrops available to purchase, I think the single flowered varieties (such as Galanthus nivalis) hold the greatest charm with their beautiful simplicity.  These wonderful bulbs look stunning planted in big drifts under deciduous trees, or try them planted around the base of coloured dogwood (cornus). Be sure to go outside and take a closer look on a warm sunny winters day as they have the most wonderful scent, a little like honey.

The snowdrop is a flowering perennial that will thrive in any moisture retentive soil. It quickly colonises and propagation is best achieved though division of clumps when they are ‘in the green’, in other words when they are in full growth. Bulbs are also best bought from suppliers ‘in the green’ and there are many mail order and on line stockist, try Broadleigh Bulbs for a nice variety of spring flower bulbs including the snowdrop.

We would love to see the photo’s of the first flowers to emerge in your garden so please visit our Facebook page and upload them.

An office refurbishment with a difference

We have just finished refurbishing the 5th floor suite of conference rooms at Brick Court Chambers in the City. The renovations, which were 6 months in the design and planning and just under 4 weeks to complete from start to finish, included the replacement of the building’s air conditioning system; design and installation of a sustainable LED lighting system on motion sensors; and the installation of a very impressive audio visual system including cutting-edge video, telephone conferencing, and wi-fi. All furniture, flooring and window dressings were also replaced and all the existing woodwork was treated and restored.

The clients have occupied the premises in the heart of London for more than 12 years. Both the decor and furniture in the suite of conference rooms were in need of modernisation; other key priorities were improved lighting and increased storage. We were required to creatively adapt existing storage areas and build new storage solutions, including turning an unused store room containing an exposed air ventilation plant into a fully functioning office.

There were a few challenges along the way including several inches of snow, the Christmas vacation and several tube strikes! However, our dedicated team of professional and highly skilled craftsmen and contractors worked very long hours and were ever more flexible in overcoming the challenges: a big thank you to all of you.

Helen and I have just spent a long weekend clearing the site, overseeing installation of the furniture, dressing the rooms and making sure everything was perfect and ready for 8am this morning. Looking at these preliminary pictures, I am sure you will agree that the end result is something that both we and the client can be very proud of. Thank you to Brick Court Chambers for the opportunity to work with you on this very exciting project.

Visit or website www.dovetail-design.co.uk for more information on how we transformed these client meeting rooms.
