Top tips for detoxing your home

The decorations are long gone and the house is looking as dull as the weather. What’s worse – the credit card is maxed out and there’s no spare cash to do any DIY at the one time of the year when you most feel like a change of scenary. With this in mind, we have prepared our top tips for detoxing and improving your living space this January. Even better, it doesn’t need to cost you anything more than a weekend of your time.

  • Declutter, and clean. Focus on those piles of items that have building in the corners for weeks- magazines, papers and clothes are the usual culprits. Then don the marigolds and turn the radio up loud!
  • Sort the storage. Vacuum bags are a super way to get old clothes and bedding packed away under a bed or in the loft. So get into those wardrobes and drawers and get vacuuming! Box files, wicker baskets, blanket boxes, bed chests and ottomans are also ideal for storing items away from sight. You can get a pack of 15 for £21 on www.amazon.co.uk, or check out your nearest Argos. For ottomans and bed chests, M&S and Laura Ashley have some very versatile and stylish high street options.
  • Organise the recycling. There are increasingly novel ways of organising your recycling, which can have a nasty habit of dominating limited space in the kitchen. We love these examples: the horizontal units are £25.52 from nigelsecostore.com (a most fabulous website for all green and sustainable items and new ideas for your home), or the vertical stacking system, £12 per unit from www.aplaceforeverything.co.uk available in black and white transluscent.

  • Ebay, charity shops and car boots. ‘Tis almost the season for car boot sales – a sociable and fun way to dispose of your least treasured items. It’s amazing what people will buy. And how many times have you looked at something and thought, ‘I must get you on Ebay’. Well, there has never been a better time to finally do it and make a few extra pounds to help pay for the Crimble presents. If you need to find your nearest car boot sale, visit www.carbootjunction.com which is a directory of all car boot sales across the UK.
  • Get on top of those annoying DIY jobs. Blown lightbulbs, broken curtain poles, stains on sofas and carpets…you get the idea. These jobs become a mental block that never gets done. Best way to tackle them is to make a list and set aside a couple of hours, or a a couple of separate sessions to blitz them….after which treat yourself with a nice cup of tea and half an hour in front of the TV.
  • Move accessories and pictures around. A very cheap and easy way to change the look of a room is to swap the accessories with either another room, or items that you’ve had stored away in a cupboard. Good examples would be cushions, throws, pictures, candles, rugs etc. Take it one step further and change the location of furniture to create a new focal point in a room, ie a window with a lovely view, a fire place or piece of furniture, or pictures on a wall.

Next week, we will show you how to take this one step further with low cost suggestions for creating a feature wall to give new character and life to your room.

On the 12th Day of Christmas: The Christmas Rose

After what seems like weeks of snow and temperatures once again reaching -13, the tide has finally turned, for now at least, and the garden has thawed. With this thaw we wait with anticipation for the first signs of life. At this time of year very little is emerging but there are a couple of favourites that can be relied on to show us that we have much to look forward to in the coming months. This week we take a look at Hellebores.

A native plant to Europe, the Hellebore, often known as the Christmas Rose, is not related to the Rose family at all. Although it shares a similarity in the flower shape to our native wild roses, it is actually part of the buttercup family.

The Hellebore, often evergreen, is an easy to grow perennial that will thrive in any moisture retentive soil in shade or semi shade. These beautiful plants add a splash of early colour to a shady corner, ideally planted under a deciduous tree where it gets the winter light in neutral to alkaline soil.

The Christmas Rose- Helleborus niger is one of the earliest plants to flower in our gardens: often a little later than it’s name suggests, it usually starts to raise its head in mid January. Its flowers are pure white or occasionally pink; and lasting for a couple of months are sure to brighten up the darkest of winter days.

The Lenten Rose – Helleborus x hybridus  (formerly orientalis) contains many varieties in a wide range of colours and traditionally flowers later than the niger variety; in late winter or early spring. Once established, they are hard to move as the roots tend to grow downwards, but freely self seed and cross pollinate to produce seedlings in a variety of colours.

Hellebores are easily grown from seed; however seedlings often take 3 years to bear flowers. It is advisable to cut leaves back in winter as buds emerge, to show them at their best and to reduce the risk of leaf spot.

We would love to see the photo’s of the first flowers to emerge in your garden so please visit our Facebook page and upload them.

Next week we will take a look at our other winter favourite, the snowdrop.

Structure in a Winter Garden

The backbone of every garden should come into it’s own at this time of year as the importance of structure is everywhere to be seen. All too many beds that are full to bursting at the height of the summer have nothing to fall back on when the flowers have faded and winter hits.

When designing a garden start by considering where you will place your key structural plants. These plants will either be evergreens, which by their nature hold their own in the depths of winter, or they will be plants with specific winter interest of bark, stems or flowers. When laying them out ensure they on their own – without any fillers – look pleasing to the eye; as lets face it, this is what we will be seeing in winter.

 Some favorites to consider would be:

  1. Box (buxus) or privet (ligustrum) which can make fantastic topiary structures for pots or at strategic places throughout the garden;
  2. Xmas box (sarcococca confusa) which is not only evergreen but has the most amazing winter scent so plant it close to a pathway;
  3. Christmas rose (Hellebores) are the queens of winter with their graceful arching stems with the most wonderful range of colours;
  4. Dog wood (cornus) can be quite underrated plants in summer but really come into their own in the winter where their brightly coloured stems make a wonder statement, especially if planted in groups;
  5. And lastly lets not forget trees such as the silver birch (betula pendula) or himalayan cherry (Prunus rufa) which have the most wonderful bark, that you can’t resist touching it on even the coldest winter day.

Another great way of creating winter interest is to not be too hasty with your autumn tidy. There are many plants that look fantastic coated in a layer of frost and you will be missing out on this if you are too hasty with your secateurs. There is a growing sway of people who are now leaving their major tidy until spring for this very reason, and in doing so you are also offering an important haven for wildlife. Seed heads can provide important food for visiting birds in the winter months and the foliage can provide habitat for over wintering insects.

Try leaving a few Allium heads, Hydangea flower heads, Echinacea purpurea seeds pods and seeds on all types of grasses until the spring and on a beautiful frosty winter morning don’t forget to go out and take lots of photo’s.

I’m dreaming of a……

So, with just a few days left before the Bloke in the Big Red Suit comes a-visiting, I thought I would share with you this interior designer’s wish list for Monsieur Claus. I spend the whole year researching, sourcing, reviewing and sampling the very best in interior design fashion, new collections and hot trends. Narrowing it down to just three favouritist items is tricky, but I’m sure you will agree that my chosen top three are pretty special. And they won’t break the bank…

1. Wall stickers are huge this year: they are an affordable and quick way to transform a wall in any room into something quirky, stylish and very personal. The stickers, which need to be applied to a clean, smooth, dry surface, add character and depth and can be easily removed once you have had enough of them. Some stickers can even be reused, allowing an unending range of design options and patterns. For something a little bit different, consider adding stickers to desk tops, windows, ceilings or cupboards. My favourites include:

  • Skirting Board Heroes by Philip Watts Design – £20

  • Racetrack wall graphic by Supernice – £39

  • Daisy restik by Supernice – £25.95

2. Personalised chalkboard message mug by Sleepyheads – £7.95

I need at least three cups of tea before I’m human in the morning. And if anyone tries to tell me anything before the end of the third cup, forget it! Or write it on my new chalkboard mug. No more forgetting to feed the dog, pick up milk, or get something out of the  freezer for dinner. Alternatively, use at work so colleagues know it’s your mug and how many sugars are needed for the 4th cup. Right, where’s the kettle…

3.  Anything by Lorna Syson at Lorna Syson Textiles.

Lorna Syson produces fabulous hand made sculptural textiles for the home. We think Lorna’s products are stunning, and would be truly unique in any interior. Her wall flowers stole the show at this year’s 100% Design exhibition and I guarantee that her luxury textile products will be gracing the pages of the glossy interior magazines for several years to come. We particularly like Lorna’s Moroccan Dahlia cushions and eco-friendly British Hedgerow cushions. The fabrics are made from a mixture of wool and stinging nettles, which are completely biodegradable and have a very low carbon footprint. My favourite has to be the ruffle cushion (£58):

or the aqua/teal dahlia wallflower at £260;

So, Mr Clause, if you’re still debating what to bring this interior designer in the heart of Warwickshire, take your pick from any of the above. Failing which, I’ll happily wait until Valentines Day for the Lorna Syson wool heart….

A Splash of Winter Colour

Hanging baskets are not just for summer, they can add a wonderful splash of colour on a dreary winters day and are very easy to make.

There is a lot of choice of winter bedding around at the moment so you can really go to town on the combinations. Unlike summer displays you will not be able to cover up all the moss, and in fact this is really not the aim as the moss in itself adds a lovely texture and colour to the entire effect. Try to pick plants for their structure and texture as well as for their flowers as you want the basket to look good all winter long even if some plants stop flowering.

The only real rule is to ensure adequate drainage. Unlike summer bedding you do not want to create a reservoir at the bottom of the basket as these plants will not like having their feet in water all winter.

How to make a winter hanging basket:

Winter Hanging Basket

 I have used the following plants:

1 x Skimmia
1 x Cyclamen
1 x Cineraria “Silver Dust”
3 x Pansy “Cat Whiskers”
2 x White Pansy
6 x Small Ivy of different varieties
1 x Stipa tenuissima “Pony Tail”

  1. Pack your moss 2/3 up the side of the basket
  2. Insert a small sheet of plastic, part of the compost bag is fine, roughly 20cm x 20cm and pierced with a number of holes to create some water retention, unlike summer baskets we do not line the whole basket
  3. Fill with good quality compost up to the moss line, ensuring it is firmed in
  4. Gently squeeze your pansies and ivy through the wire at intervals around the basket at the moss line, so that their roots are sitting on the compost
  5. Build the rest of the moss up to the top of the basket and fill with compost to the top, ensure that the compost is pressed firmly round the sides and gently slopes towards the middle creating a bowl effect
  6. Place your remaining plants on the top of the hanging basket, trail some over ivy the edge and back fill with compost
  7. If using a cyclamen plant it slightly higher than the other plants to ensure it has adequate drainage around its roots

The total cost of this hanging basket came to £16.50 including the basket and moss.

They make ideal Xmas presents too so why not have a go and with any spare you can give them away to family and friends.

Thoughts of Spring

It barely seems 5 minutes ago when we were enjoying a beautiful spring, I remember back in April having to water the garden because it was so dry and we were all dreaming of a BBQ summer.

After the cold winter everything bursts into life at the same time and there were some fabulous spring displays.  Now, after a gloomy cold and wet August it’s time to start dreaming of next spring and all the possibilities that lie ahead of us.

There is a vast array of spring bulbs available at this time of year and it can be quite daunting making the right decision, we all feel like kids in a sweet shop, but how do you make the right choices to ensure a display your neighbours will be envious of?

Enhance what you have

If you already have a carpet of daffodils every spring try extending the season and plant some early and late flowering varieties such as Narcissus ‘Rijnveld’s Early Sensation’ . This variety has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit and often flowers in early January.

Colour combinations

One of the fundamentals of a successful planting scheme is to understand how each plant relates to those around it in structure, form and of course colour. There are many successful colour combinations that you can easily experiment with in any garden and the use of spring bulbs is one of the easiest ways to do this. The only thing you really need to bear in mind in when the plant is in bloom.

Why not have a go with a few of these favorites:

Blue and Yellow

Blue and Yellow Iris

Purple and Pink

Yellow and Red

There is still lots of choice in the shops so get shopping, just make sure you get them planted by the end of November.  Next time from us…….we are off to Design week so we will be reporting back on all the wonderful new collections we discover.
